CHARACTER INFO

Character: Oswald
Canon: Odin Sphere Leifthrasir - After his canon fight in Armageddon
Age: Mid-20's

Background Information: Once upon a time, a baby was born of a royal taboo - that being, the union of a Prince and a Commoner. The King, both in anger and fear of a prophecy, saw this couple quietly assassinated with only their baby left alive. They would have perished as well had they not been saved by a fae named Melvin, a Duke of the Fairy Kingdom as well as a Council Advisor and Commander of the Vanir Army. Melvin would name this child Oswald and raise the boy as his own.

For a time, Oswald is raised as a normal child, but Melvin would soon change course for his own ambitions, turning Oswald into a soldier of the Kingdom, and not just any soldier. His body and soul would be unknowingly pledged, like many before, to the Queen of the Netherworld, Odette, in exchange for her powers. These powers as well would be better controlled through a cursed, red crystal-tipped sword named 'Belderiver' should Oswald prove strong enough to not have his soul immediately devoured by it. 'Fortunately' for his life, Oswald proves beyond capable of wielding both Belderiver and Odette's magic with enough proficiency that he could slay dragons, earning him the title of 'Shadow Knight'.

When Oswald inevitably learns the truth of everything Melvin has done during an attempted coup, he gives into despair, wondering what the point of his life is at all. Was he only a tool? Everyone he's ever killed, should he have killed them? During his turmoil, he's briefly reclaimed by Odette in the Netherworld, but the sight of a blue bird there that makes him decide to seek out his own life; and perhaps, save another almost similarly trapped in his position. For the first time, he pledges to follow his own desires.

Personality: Oswald, to put it simply, is that brooding adult in the corner that few people approach and most choose to actively avoid. He doesn't talk often, but when he does, he's thought about what to say. He didn't grow up with too much social interactions besides his 'father', Melvin, and the dwarf, Brom, so freely communicating and expressing himself is difficult to say the least. In the past as well, his thoughts towards others were rarely kind, more contemplative over whether or not to kill for his 'father's' sake.

With his soldier upbringing and consequences of his previous violence, Oswald is quite wary of people. He's been used as a weapon on numerous occasions and back-stabbed plenty by friend and foes alike - most of whom are now dead, but not all by his hand. That's part of his temperamental nature, keeping a cool head when discussions or negotiations are just regarding himself, but any threats to the little he actually cares about are not so easily forgiven, going so far to threaten to kill godlike beings before only for them to step down. Still, despite temperament, once actively in battle, Oswald is a cruel one-man army, felling many of the Aesir's military, slaying plenty of monsters including the Halja that pursue him, and eventually, killing his own Grandfather after he transforms into an undead, three-headed beast. Few live when Oswald is sent after them, but he has learned some restraint these days.

Outside of it all, Oswald's in the process of figuring himself out. For all the bad he's experienced in the world, he's managed to find some hope, and wants to try understanding more outside of betrayal and carnage. So far, he's learned he's still capable of loving and trusting others, even expressing his pain and sorrow without lashing out. Though he is bothered by how many he's slain when he was only warrior-minded, he doesn't really regret where this path has brought him; as long as he determines his own ending this time.

Abilities & Inventory:

Personal Inventory: Boots, dark pants, white dress shirt, blue feather, one seed bag, one mandragora bag, two bags (for assorted small items), two empty bottles (in one of the bags)

Equipment: Black Armor, Red Crystal-Tipped Sword "Belderiver" (don't touch), Sun Pendant, Power Stone, Fireproof Charm

Notable Equipment:
- Belderiver: A black sword tipped by a red crystal. Forged by the dwarf, Brom, use of sword is only granted to those contracted to Queen Odette, the Queen of the Netherworld. Should one not be contracted, or be too weak to handle its power, there's a curse to turn the 'wielder' into a Revenant. Though typical in appearance, the crystal on the blade is capable of trapping life energy/souls inside it to fuel magic usage. Trapped energy can be expelled for other uses like growing plants in the land of Erion. If standing idle, the crystal only absorbs errant souls passively; otherwise, Oswald must actively encourage the crystal to absorb a soul.

Abilities:
- Non-Magical: As mentioned prior, Oswald is a trained soldier. The title 'Shadow Knight' might give the impression of a slower fighter, but Oswald's actually the one of the faster characters when it comes to ground speed movement. He doesn't have much in vertical issues either, capable of clearing a few feet in a jump or using such ability to help climb a mountain and bring down aerial combatants. Despite armor as well, he's capable of performing espionage and reconnaissance on his own, spying on the likes of King Odin and his soldiers without being spotted. He also has the endurance and strength to keep the likes of the Halja - Netherworld reapers that Odette habitually sends to try taking his soul - away from him. And while he can function on little to no sleep and also is a light sleeper, that's not necessarily a good thing.

As a side note, he can use basic alchemy though, alchemy in Erion is roughly taking an empty bottle and throwing whatever into it. Food strengthens the end result, assorted mandragora change the properties of magic that comes out, old equipment can be turned into power enhancements, and various objects like seeds and even trash can result in potions that can transform items into other goods or enemies into frogs (temporary on the enemies side).

- Magical: Oswald is an unwilling practitioner in dark magic from the Netherworld thanks to the blood contract his 'father', Melvin, made with Queen Odette. Fortunately, none of these abilities are instantly lethal, and depending on ability, more physical or magical energy is required for their use. The main power that Oswald's best known for from this magic is his Berserker form, cladding him in dark flames except for his glowing eyes and his sword's crystal. His body twists into an undefined, flickering beast with claws that can rend and rake, all while enhancing his physical capabilities further. Depending how 'in' the fight he is, the longer the form can last while risking his sanity, but without the adrenaline, it only lasts a couple of seconds. If he does require an escape, he can disappear into a void or shadow, and make himself scarce.

As for other assorted abilities he can use from this magic, here is the list:

Physical -
• Aerial Dive: An angled diving attack that ends with a swipe.
• Phantom Killer: Lures enemies into a counter-attack where he disappears behind them and stabs them in the back.
• Crazed Grip: Gap closer into a grapple where he throws enemies into the ground, sometimes hard enough for an aerial combo after.
• Fatal Raid: Oswald temporarily cloaks his legs in black flame before lashing out with kicks, increasing damage.
• Vile Rush: A furious combo of strikes that ends with a powerful blow. It can be cancelled, and/or the last strike can be redirected.

Magical -
• Shadow Bite: Shadows crawl towards his enemy, striking them from below.
• Serpent Grief: Black flames writhe and leap towards a target in a serpentine manner to damage them.
• Gushing Bane: Summons walls of black flame to trap enemies with. Oswald can pass through them, but others who attempt to bypass will be damaged.
• Rising Void: Creates a small vortex on the ground to pull enemies in. Think a momentary crowd control ability.
• Nightmare Blast: Black flame homes in on enemies and encircle them for a short period of time while inflicting damage.
• Shade Pulsar: Unleashes two flames to converge on the enemy or enemies with enough force to knock most back upon contact (heavier foes can take the brunt of the attack, but will not be knocked back).
• Eclipse: Expands a shadowy aura ahead, siphoning energy from the opponent(s) that encounter it. Stolen energy is passed to Oswald.
• Exclusion: For a short time, Oswald doesn't feel any damage.
• Dáinsleif: Trapping enemies into an enclosed area, Oswald releases a rush of combos - in his Berserker form with black flames to follow - ending with a finisher to deal massive damage.

Wikia Link is rough, but there's a more in-depth look into how each ability is used in-game universe and the costs. Warning: some of the grammar is rough.

ARMADA SELECTION

I'm choosing Corsairs for Oswald since, despite his turn around, he's still not a good person nor does he act for overall good; instead, he chooses to act for himself, and if he helps others along the way, it happens.

SAMPLE

Test Drive Sample: TDM here.

Questions: Since he's from around the end of the game, I kind of gave him the equipment I picked up in my own game. The armor, blue feather, sword, one item pouch, seed bag, and the mandragora bag are the standard if you'd rather I give him those.
