IN CHARACTER INFORMATION

Name: Oswald
Canon: Odin Sphere
OU/AU/OC: OU
Canon Point: After Armageddon

History: History Wikia Link

Personality: Aloof by way of his upbringing and often aggressive first, Oswald is actually as an individual who often seeks a reason to live. Raised to be the perfect knight, he mostly did so out of gratitude and hoping to please his 'father' originally. This results in him being feared and resented by all his enemies, leaving him with only Melvin and Brom, and his behavior mainly being aggressive and blood-thirsty. His goals are only for Melvin's success; he even goes so far as plotting regicide on the young Princess so he could rule. Unfortunately, when the truth is revealed, Oswald falls into despair and wonders what was the meaning to his life, and even begins to feel regret for some he killed before such as Hindel. He remains in such mood until he sees the bird predicted by the Wise Dragon aforementioned.

That bird would turn out to be leading him to his future with Gwendolyn, the Valkyrie Princess and 'Odin's Witch' to the Vanir. Treated very much the same way as he was under her father's rules, Oswald makes it his goal to see her happy and treat her with the respect she deserves, growing so much as to really love her and wanting to show his devotion. Though they first officially met on the battlefield, he lets her go. However, this would probably be due from earlier spying in her kingdom and seeing her mistreatment personally, and actually feeling more than his aggressive nature wanting to reach out and help her. Since growing estrange from his adoptive father, he has given people more chances and stay his hand when he could easily harm. The best way to test his patience though is by attempting to go back on a promise/contract, betraying him, or treating someone as a lesser being especially Gwendolyn.

Though he's primarily a fighter, Oswald is fairly intelligent, savvy about navigating the land mostly due to being raised in the forest and capable of making his way around larger kingdoms without concern, getting by security and managing to spy on his opposition. He's capable of thinking on his feet which adds to his threat. Though he comes to resent being feared as "The Shadow Knight", he can utilize his power as a warning, but only to those who test him, and is still willing to start fights with other aggressors who choose to be less-than honorable. Oswald as his own person is willing to negotiate and talk; however, he tends to be wary, unsure of what could be on the other person's mind. It makes him awkward, but willing to try other things besides violence.

Strengths: Oswald is one of the most feared people in Erion, the world where Odin Sphere takes place. He's called the 'Shadow Knight' and is known to have a cursed sword called the Belderiver. This sword is tipped with a special red crystal known as a psypher which absorbs the life energy released mainly after a person is killed, but wielding it, Oswald's soul has been sold to the Queen of the Netherworld, Odette. How much power he has depends on how much she'll give him. Despite this, as long as he holds the Belderiver, none of her Shinigami (Halja) will approach him unless directly ordered as Oswald can defeat them easily. With the Belderiver as well, Oswald can transform into a dark shadow beast that appears consumed by black flames. This form increases his strength and speed as well as making him almost impervious to damage. HOWEVER, the more times this ability is used, the higher the chances Oswald will lose himself and becomes a lost spirit known as a Revenant which absolutely no memory of himself.

Besides the pros and cons of owning this cursed sword, there are also the magical abilities that can be used after the Psypher is strong enough. The list of abilities are as follows:

Invisible -
As name says, this ability makes Oswald invisible. He can't be attacked like this, but at the same time, he can't attack. It's generally used as a time just to recover health. It wears off after some time.

Phozon Burst -
With a high number of phozons, a powerful burst of energy is released up to a small radius. It can hit multiple enemies for a high volume of damage.

Phozon Release -
Again, as name says. It releases a small number of Phozons. The ability is commonly used in game for growing seeds (at least, that's the only reason I use it).

Psypher Heal -
Releasing a collection of Phozons, this ability heals any damage Oswald has been given as long as he remains still. The second he moves or is hit, the healing stops.

Cyclone -
Using more phozon energy, a cyclone can be created that will damage all in its path... even Oswald should he accidentally get hit by it (seriously, it's annoying).

Overload -
A high volume of phozon energy is released to double Oswald's attack power only for a limited time.

Beyond the abilities bestowed by the Belderiver, Oswald is still a knight to contend with. Even with all the armor he wears, he's one of the faster playable characters in Odin Sphere and the strongest out of them. Strangely, he also can jump quite the distance and cover half the map with a single bound. Same with the other characters, he can also use Alchemy to make various potions and concoctions to help out in battle.

Due to being from after the game, the Belderiver has technically been sacrificed to the Cauldron in order to restore Erion after Armageddon. However, I would like the abilities that came with it carried over in his Dragon form due to its inherit magical nature with the required energy source being gems as opposed to life energy/souls and the power actually his to maintain.

Weaknesses: Oswald is obviously better suited for the battle field than any manner of social gathering. If it weren't for Brom, Myris, and Gwendolyn, Oswald would technically be alone in the world. However, Brom looks as Oswald as a matter of atonement for crafting the cursed Belderiver, and, while Myris is Gwendolyn's personal Pooka attendant and initially fears Oswald, she comes to understand he is a good person. Finally, Gwendolyn is a fellow warrior and also his wife. She better understands him than most people, having been used for a number of her father's ploys a number of times even unknowingly. She's the first person that really gives him a purpose to live.

That's another thing: Oswald can be self-destructive. When Melvin told Oswald of everything he did in raising him as a tool, the knight immediately fell into despair and allowed himself to be taken to the Netherworld. This isn't the only time because, though he escapes and does receive Gwendolyn's hand, when he learns of her betrayal, it completely breaks him. As he is, if there's no one to fight for and no one to live for, he doesn't mind giving into Death. He sees no value in himself otherwise though Armageddon and its following events have left him with an obvious reason to go on living.

Possessions: Blue feather - A feather from Gwendolyn's own wings. A precious gift he holds when they must be parted.

Pony/Animal Type: Dragon of the Wyvern breed. He's like a cross between the Gore Magala from Monster Hunter and Wagner, one of the boss dragons in Odin Sphere proper.
Cutie Mark: None

First Person:
[This one has not appeared on the scrolls before, and doesn't appear happy about using them either. Though, were the viewer a large black scaled wyvern themselves, they probably wouldn't have any ease in accessing the small device either. Red eyes glowing from under horn, it seemed as though they were contemplating, eventually letting out a breath.]

I... seem to have caused a disturbance upon finding myself here. That was not my intention. Finding myself displaced however was unexpected.

[Apologizing? That's not exactly going to happen. What he said was was close as it was going to get. Instead, the dark dragon moved on]

If someone could explain why I have been cursed with this form... and possibly explain what these strange hooved beings are.

[And he was going to sit and wait for answers. If any answers come...]
